The products affected are Bacon Fries, Scampi Fries and Cheesy Moments.
Cheesy moments are out of stock with immediate effect and Bacon Fries, Smith Savoury Selection and Scampi Fries will be unavailable from dates in January Attached.
We have recently commissioned new lines to produce these products which unfortunately have experienced start up issues meaning we are not able to produce any of the range in the short term. We are working hard to resolve this issue as soon as possible but regrettably the affected products are unlikely to be available until March 2018.
We will keep you fully informed of progress on this and your account team will be in touch to understand the impact for you, and work with you on providing alternative options.

As previously mentioned we will not be authorising Gourmet Classic to undertake new packaging in the Sterling Brand. We want to wait and see how the market shakes out. I had previously mentioned using Lefktro as they offered a flavourful and competitive product, however we have not discovered that they used the wrong pricing. Short of starting the exercise again I think our best option is to share the comparison sheets – which shows the alcohol levels and put each suppliers price list on the internet for members to decide. The most competitive pricewise is Chefs Kitchen and the live product we saw at the December did taste better than the samples we had in November but still not great. We at HO shall try for samples again and do an across the board sampling and report back.

Paul Underwood 0208 290 7012 tells me that sales are WAY down in-fact we only did one tenth of the sales for the same period of Oct 2016 this means that their production is well ahead of sales. And they currently have 11 pallets of packed stock that has a “short” shelf life. The product has 15 weeks on it and Paul would appreciate members taking this in. Since my meeting with him yesterday I now have prices from Castle which are slightly more attractive.
I have told Paul that they need to modify their production due to the very high prices as even taking into account Castle sales we were still 2/3rds lower by volume.

We have great connections in the industry, ranging from Business Development Managers all the way up to Managing Directors & CEO’s.

Cooking Wine
A member has told me that Gourmet Classic are sending out individual letters asking members to commit to a volume. I would urge you NOT to do that. I have told Angus that with his very high levels of increase we cannot judge how much we will be selling going forwards.
At the buying meeting it was felt that members should duel supply the 4.8% & the 1.2% abv and see where this leads us in the coming months.
Additionally Gourmet Classic are apparently implying that product in your warehouse on 1st Jan 2018 will be subject to Duty. I’ve spoken to David at Chefs Kitchen and David Visick at the FWD and both concur that product is already in your warehouse is not subject to this only the newly purchased after that date.
David Visick – FWD states: “The Goods are released from bond already so duty point has passed and therefore they have been passed for consumption so no duty payable. Same applies to any product released up to 1/1/18”
David at Chefs Kitchen tells me that Bookers have bought 7 FCL to be delivered by 17th Dec 2017 which much much more than they usually use.
Wrap Film Systems Ltd – Sterling Caterers Essentials – Film Foil
Ben Correia M. 07985 993853 tells me that price increase letters were sent out in error to Sterling Members. We are still trying to agree pricing for 2018, hopefully agreed by next week.
Nestlé Professional UK Ltd
Malcolm Doy M. 07979 695566 says: “In order to maintain product freshness of some of our single lines, we are reducing case sizes in Quarter one, 2018. This will result in case sizes moving from 48 or 36 count to 32 or 24 count. The details of these changes are available via your Nestlé Account Manager.
We will also be undertaking changes across our sharing bag range to improve design and functionality of our bags and cases. This will result in some case sizes moving from 12 to 8 count and some reductions in pack sizes. These changes are in line with category demands and we continue to ensure that our bags remain competitive in the marketplace. The details of these changes are attached. Please be aware that this is phase one of the changes and some products will change at a later date and some products due to technical restrictions won’t change at this time. If you have any concerns or queries please raise these with your Nestlé Account Manager.”

Gourmet Classic Ltd
Angus I’Anson sent the following:
The cooking wine industry has seen the biggest changes since Gourmet Classic invented the category in 1998. In 2017 HMRC introduced excise duty and the weather has ruined crops creating a world shortage and a massive price increase on wine.
The latest confirmation from HMRC stating that if you have any stock of cooking wine on the 1st January 2018 you must pay the excise duty outstanding on it. HMRC clearly say you should buy your product from an approved excise warehouse and the duty must be accounted for.
“With effect from 1 January 2018, any dutiable form of cooking alcohol must be held in an approved excise warehouse under duty suspensions until they are released for consumption in the UK with the UK excise duty accounted for on them.
The Alcoholic Ingredients Relief scheme (as detailed in Excise Note 41) provides a mechanism for the reclaim of excise duty if alcohol is used in the production of a foodstuff.”
You need not be concerned by this law change. Gourmet Classic own and operate an approved excise warehouse and our Cooking Alcohol products all have our HMRC AWRS approval number clearly written on them.
With regard excise duty accounted for on Cooking wines etc, Gourmet Classic have already satisfied The Alcoholic Ingredients Relief (Excise Notice 41) and goods you receive from Gourmet Classic are free to be sold as they always have.
The crop failure has caused a massive price hike, but more important a shortage of available wine to make Cooking Wine in 2018. Attached is a supply contract to reserve your sales requirements for next year. Gourmet Classic will be confirming all its wine contract it has reserved for 2018 in Europe and the new worlds by 24th November 2017. I urge you to sign and return your requirement for next year before this date. It is possible after this date we will not be able to take on any new business.
I wish to confirm that only gourmet Classic can supply you the same product that you have enjoyed selling for 20 years without any excise liability to you, your product will still be 4.8% abv as always. All the product you receive from us will have our AWRS approval number printed on for traceability to HMRC.

Vimto
Gary Duncan M. 07934 296375 says: “I am writing to inform you of the increases we are making to the cost price on a number of our products and changes in our promotional pricing for 2018. These increases will be effective for orders placed from Monday 5th February 2018 onwards, whilst PMP changes will phase in during January & February 2018. (Please find attached product details).
At Vimto we are of course constantly looking to manage and absorb additional costs, however given the significant rises in prices it has become necessary to implement this increase as we are no longer able to absorb all the incremental costs ourselves.”

Attached is a list of the items that are going into the Sterling Caterers Essentials label and also attached is a list of the remaining items that will be branded Triple Lion. These are invoice prices and include a 2% overrider. With Kerry away it may be difficult to get packaging up and running immediately but we shall try to get this in place as soon as possible.

Kellogg Marketing and Sales Company – Muesli
Aimee Fitzpatrick M. 07554 415765 says: “We have reviewed our muesli offering within the business and looked at what is available in other markets and what fits with current trends. As such we have taken the decision to swap our current Muesli offering to a better recipe and version.
These changes will take effect from Monday 4th December, from this point the ‘old/current’ muesli will no longer be available for order. I have attached a one pager illustrating the changes and case codes, if you could please ensure your product lists are updated and all members informed of these changes.”
Central Foods Ltd
Oli Sampson M. 07715 073 273 says: “We have today been informed by Frampton’s, that a surcharge will be applied on all Egg products leaving their premises from 6th November 2017. I have attached a Statement from the Managing Director at Frampton’s, along with an Industry recognised index, which will be used as the base to control/adjust the surcharge going forward. We will have written out to all Sterling members directly who are affected by this but I wanted to make head office aware of this issue by close of play today.
This situation is unprecedented, brought about by the recent Fipronil issue in Europe, which has resulted in a huge shortage of suitable “Eggs for Breaking” , the type used in the production of manufactured egg products.
Rather than put in place a price increase, they believe the best way to handle this is with a surcharge, which can be monitored and adjusted as the current situation develops, similar to that used on Diesel within the transport sector.
Although these increases are effective from Monday the 6th November into ourselves, given we have around 2 weeks stock, if everyone orders at their normal levels and we apply a 75% rationing, it will allow us to hold off these increases until Deliveries from w/c 4th December 2017. Please work with us on this as we are trying to be fair to all our Customers during this difficult time.
This Surcharge impacts on each product at varying levels depending on the actual Egg content of the item, the individual impact will be communicated to members directly.”

Fruit Juice – Sterling Caterers Essentials – Dual Supply
As per the email circulated earlier in the week we have decided that we will have to move away from Princes for the 2018 Sterling Orange and Apple Juice Contract, as we could not get them into a competitive position. The decision was taken to spilt the Orange and Apple Juice between Mulrines for Orange Juice and Multiple Marketing for Apple Juice
We are aware that this is not the ideal situation but the offers are such that to put both lines with either one of these supplier would have meant a large increase in either apple or orange. This solution saves around 11% from the best offer that Princes were able to put forward for 2018. Both Supplies have agreed to a single pallet drop if necessary but will require straight pallets of the Own Label in that case.
Apple blossom in southern Europe had been subject to severe frosts at the beginning of the season resulting in the lowest harvest since 2007 I have been told by both Princes and Mulrines that the Multiple Marketing offer is exceptional and that apparently Brakes are currently getting offers in the £6.30+ range.
The other item to point out is that Multiple Marketing pack into “Cathedral Carton” with a screw top and Mulrines will continue to pack in the slim block as current packaging. I have tried to leave as much flexibility for members to buy their ancillary juices from either supplier, though of course both of them would like you to place that volume with them.
Attached is the price list from Mulrines for Orange Juice and from Multiple Marketing for Apple Juice. A commitment form has already been circulated could you complete and return to Carol ASAP and by Monday at the latest? Only the yellow highlighted boxes need to be completed.
Princes – Apple Juice – Increase.
Please see attached communication from Princes requesting a more than 50% increase on our current cost as set out below.
Drop | Current net net | Proposed net net | Increase % |
2 Pallet | £4.30 | £6.51 | 51.40% |
5 Pallet | £4.25 | £6.46 | 52.00% |
FCL | £3.95 | £6.15 | 55.70% |
As far as I am aware at this point Princes have not yet put their proposed pricing in the system. I will let you know of any further response from them.
The Silver Spoon Company
Kelly Burke M. 07872 465 536 we have agreed to new lower pricing from Silver Spoon for the coming season. The new price comes into effect from Monday 30th October. Details attached.
Britannia Superfine Ltd
Danny Shayes Tel: 07825 984175 represents this (and other companies) – Danny came into the tender process with some very good pricing on some key lines, but only had a very small range. They are however sourcing additional lines in the near future to expand their offer. Attached are details of their original offer that Danny says he will honour until the end of the year, he also stated: “My only other point on pricing. We presume you want fixed £ Sterling prices but all UK sugar prices are based in €uros which is why you have either the USCR system or Sterling prices fixed to volume. These prices were converted @ €1.118 when I originally bid and we will hold these prices until the end of December before we review as no volume is guaranteed and will continue to review quarterly from there. Alternatively, we can use the USCR system if you prefer.” Credit application form attached.

Eggs
Billy at EKF mentioned that he is seeing egg prices spiral upwards. Do any members have suggestions for alternative supply? I would be interested to hear if you do. I am aware that prices are being pushed upwards by the Firponil problem but any suggestions would be welcome.
CustomPack Ltd – Pepper Glitch.
Simon Willars M. 07872 101399 says: “We have discovered a price query from our system that has not picked up on pepper being sold at a loss from our business to specific customers since a soar in price in mid- 2016.
We have addressed this now but as one of the customers affected it does mean a significant price increase on the price our system was previously picking up.
We have been honouring prices since we found the issue but will as part of the new agreement be re-aligning the price to be what we believe to be very competitive in the market but not unsustainable! This affects the 1,000 count case price which will move from £2.32 > £2.95 invoice price, then netted back by 3%. The 5,000 count pack will also move from £10.19 > £13.12.
Many apologies for this oversight but it had been down to a system error beyond our control. I have attached a pricing document to reflect the change which won’t be applied until 2 January 2018.”
Simon goes on to say: “There is also a BBQ sauce promotion running currently presenting a preferential price for a limited period which overrides the contract price for the Halloween season and possibly beyond depending on the promotion’s success! We’ve also added a more competitive Fairtrade sugar price as members have enquired in the past. “
Please see below the November promotional details on Pepper, that you asked me to re-send.

Shelf Life reduction:
Because of the introduction of MRC to our new Nescafé Gold, there will be an amendment to the shelf life of most SKUs:
- Shelf life on stick packs, vending pouches, refill bags and all retail SKUs are moving from 24th months to 18 months. &Go does not change and remains at 12 months.
- For the 1kg, 750g and 500g tins, we will be reducing the shelf life to 12 months as a temporary measure whilst we monitor the roll out of the new range in our Sqround tins through Q4 and into Q1. Subject to satisfactory tests from our technical team, it is our aim to have the shelf life for tins updated to 18 months no later than the end of Q1 2018.
This is a soft change, the barcodes are not changing so any orders will be automatically subbed over by customer services.
However all linecodes are changing, please find a summary below.

Active Brand Concepts Ltd – Sterling Caterers Essentials – Chemicals
James Sharpe M. 07807 259729 T. 01270 449040 E. james@active-brand-concepts.com
We have taken the decision to move the Sterling Branded Chemicals away from Cleenol and move to Active Brand Concepts or ABC as this will represent a significant savings for the group. The basket price is 40% lower than our current pricing. Chemicals has been an area where we were aware for quite some time that the pricing should improve, we had shied away from making any change due to the complexity of the products and all of the backup COSHH sheets etc.
ABC are very active in retail and are the own label supplier to Bestway so they are also familiar with foodservice and can provide a comprehensive service to include wall charts and a dedicated website for coshh sheets.
We are in the process of agreeing artwork with them and agreeing a launch date, we would expect to be up and running by the beginning of 2018 we are hoping to have things in place ahead of this but will keep you informed, so far their artwork team have been very responsive.
ABC have checked dilution rates of our current product and will be producing to that specification, however there may be some colour changes to products for example the window cleaner may change from clear to blue or vise versa.
ABC has agreed to pay a 2% overrider. Attached is a list of products that we as a group buy over 50 cases per year with pricing, additional products and pricing shall follow.
Attached is their credit application form, their address is : The Forge, Crewe Hall Farm, Old Park Road, Crewe, Cheshire, CW1 5UE.
There are however a few lines that ABC do not manufacture themselves such as dishwasher tables and aerosols they will be able to supply these just not in our brand. We have informed Cleenol of our intention to move the vast majority of products across to ABC, it was noted at the meeting that Cleenol would do an own label for an individual wholesaler if they so a member really wished to stay with Cleenol the Sterling label could still be made available to them, however with these savings on the table I would be amazed if members did not move across.
The Chefs Kitchen Ltd – Sterling Caterers Essentials – Vinegar
David Myers M. 07891 5909906 we will renew the vinegar with Chef’s Kitchen at current pricing.
Huegli UK Ltd – Sterling Caterers Essentials – Bouillon
Tim Fielding M. 07854 198 445 says: “First of all allow me to thank you for being such a loyal and consistent customer of Huegli UK over the years. Your satisfaction is very important to us and we hope we have been successful in providing you with excellent customer service and products. We never like having to write a letter like this, but unfortunately sometimes it is necessary. As you are aware there has been a significant fall of 10-15% in the value of Sterling against the Euro and Swiss Franc following Brexit. As a result of this we are going to have to raise our prices by 5% across the entire Sterling range. This price increase is the minimum we can offer and is something we must do in order to continue to provide you with the quality you’ve come to expect. The increase will take effect 1st February 2018.” Price list attached. Tim has suggested that he will be offering a promo at the Spring Show in March to off-set this a little.

Angus I’Anson T. 01202 863040 See below further information from Angus. I suggest Members stock up before the price increase takes effect on 1st November.
“Attached is a force majeure letter confirming that all of Gourmet Classic contracts with all of their customers finish on 15th November 2017. I have not written this letter for legal reasons, but to prove that we are all on a level playing field and more importantly that your members may be able to use this with their own customers to renegotiate their contracts.
We have written directly to the membership to advise them of the Gourmet Classic price increase from 1st November and have offered that they could take two month’s supply in one month on condition that it is delivered and invoiced in October.
I wish to make the situation very clear, we do not have a product supply problem we have a price problem. I realise the problems that this causes your business and hopefully you realise the problems that my business faces. We have waited until the correct time to inform you of these price changes and market conditions and have brought you a solution as opposed to a problem. There is no supply issue, there is only a price issue. As a loyal supplier we would like to make it quite clear that we would like to retain your business going forward and look forward to being invited to the 2018 tender.” 1st November price list attached again.

Following reports of butter prices falling on Friday, Daniel called Paul to discuss what Pritchitts position was on their current pricing. Paul’s opinion was that he felt the drop in prices seen over the last few days will be short lived and expected to see them rise again before Christmas. He also stated that Pritchitts price will be unchanged until the end of month reports are provided. If Pritchett’s price was to change after reviewing the reports then it would be roughly two weeks following the review before the price would become available to us.

Kelly Newell M. 07894 492474 says: “We have identified a discrepancy in the previous communicated pricing on our sku Jaffa 12×10’s which does not affect the overall EDLP net price but the invoice cost to members. Prior to today they would have been invoiced at £9.75 with EDLP retro of £0.51 net £9.24. Moving to invoice cost of £11.54 with EDLP retro of £2.30 net £9.24
For now members would have had the benefit as the invoice cost would have been incorrect but has now been amended in our system to reflect the new price, we will take no action to correct this.
I have also reattached the activity plan for Jaffa snack pack which was moving from 24’s to 18’s. Based on travel test this will now be 20’s. Buy in does not start on this until November and due to efficiencies there is no EDLP retro as this is built into invoice previously advised. Attached is the updated EDLP price file.”
Gourmet Classic Ltd
Angus I’Anson T. 01202 863040 – Angus I’Anson from Gourmet Classic came into head office this week to deliver a steep price increase on Sterling Caterers Essentials cooking wines. New prices attached. The increase has been put down to many factors such poor harvests in Europe, short supply and other operational costs. See justification document attached.
From the 1st January 2018 there will also be a change to the import duty laws for Cooking wine which means a considerable increase, £1.22ltr, for any imports containing 1.2% of alcohol or more. This is potentially a £14.64/case increase in duty alone on Sterling products for example.
Angus believes Gourmet Classic will be the only cooking wine supplier able to avoid this duty because of a loop hole they have spotted and prepared for.
The duty can be claimed back if the wine is used in manufacturing.
As Gourmet Classic already produces our product in the UK with imported wines they will be able to claim back the duty and pass on the savings in part to its customers.
The increase of around 60% cannot be justified based on market changes alone and it seems Gourmet Classic is taking the opportunity to widen their margins.
We have now gone to tender to see what improvements on cost can be found as Angus was very firm about their new prices being the “right” price going forward.

Fayrefield Foods – Sterling Caterers Essentials – Block Cheese
Rod Allsworth M. 07920 536959 price increase on block attached along with their full price list, Rod says: “I am writing to you with some further price changes, we are still seeing further increases in the dairy market and this looks likely to continue for the remainder of 2017.
Butter remains as POA for the time being so please ask for a price on a weekly basis as this is subject to change (Sorry!!)
We are also seeing the Euro have an effect on many products in the range as the pound hits its lowest level since 2009 and this week has been constantly below €1.10.
This without doubt has been one of the most difficult years in the dairy industry and one that no one could have predicted.
I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for your continued business and remind you all that we are here to help in any way we can.
One final note is that we need to ensure that we fulfil our minimum order requirements. We base our prices on full mixed pallets and need to ensure that we do make the pallets up as we are working on extremely tight margins and pallets that contain anything less than that make the difference between making a small profit and actually losing money (yes our margins really are that slim!!)
All price, up or down will need to come into effect for deliveries on and after Monday 16th October 2017.”
I’ve spoken to Rod who tells me that most members are now buying from FJ Needs, he says that that the business has taken margins down to the absolute minimum and these prices have to be implemented.

1735 Newsletter Dry Goods – 1st September 2017
We have had a few problems with the intranet ambient newsletter that we keep trying to resolve but the problem re-asserts itself and has left us (and our IT) mystified, we have decided to not continue to overwrite the document anymore and split it Jan-July and Aug to year end. I am afraid that it will make it a little more difficult to search the document for an item but it is the best solution that we could come up with.
Sterling Conference – Aide Memoir
We have today posted out aide memoirs covering the running order of the conference – please do hand a copy to any other member of your team that is going to attend so that they are aware of what is happening when.
Conference
I thought I would share with you a comment from a supplier that has chosen not to attend the conference this year, having been at last years event:
“I only got to meet a few of the members, I appreciate that the Members have certain suppliers that they wish to talk to but the least they could do is visit the other exhibitors who have made a substantive contribution towards the event, both financial and in the time and effort of getting to the venue and setting up their stands. The principal behind the Sterling Conference is excellent that we, as manufacturers, have an opportunity to meet all the members that attend but the reality is different.”
I don’t want to belabour too much how important it is for members to use the full time allotted at the exhibition and at least give suppliers the opportunity to make their pitch.

I am afraid that this commodity just keeps on its inexorable rise!

Martin Mathew – Sterling Caterers Essentials – Tinned Tomatoes
Joe Murphy M. 07855 082200 says that many members have used up their current contract for tomatoes – if you fall into this category he would like you to note that he will be charging the new contract rate attached on all orders placed in September. He also want you to note that this will be over and above the volume committed to, that will start in October. If you want September volume to be subtracted from your committed volume he must be notified of this fact.
If you have not used up your current allocation Joe warns that all volumes at current rates must but purchased by the end of September as he shall be closing out all accounts and starting fresh from Oct. We have your volumes here so please ask if you are in any doubt.

Catering B stock levels are very tight and unfortunately, we are shorting the C pack this week but I have requested that we alternate the plan as much as possible from start up so we have both skus in pipefill. Whitakers Chocolates Ltd – Corporate Thank You’s
Simon Matthews M. 07801 340377 says: “Whitakers can offer gift boxes of chocolates & truffles for this purpose, branded & printed with your particular message to your corporate partners etc. With various sizes available for all budgets, and a minimum order of just 100 boxes, these make a very cost effective gift at Christmas. Perhaps this is also something you could suggest to your members as a gift they could give to their customers, in place of the normal beer or wine that a lot of wholesalers will give at Christmas. This is also a very effective marketing plan, that those given a box as a gift can then be approached to take boxes in their own branding.
There is a huge variety of colours of box and print to choose from – please see attached. As an example, 100 x 4 chocolate boxes, printed to your requirements, would be just £2.80 per box plus vat. This includes origination of artwork & printing on the lid. Gift box orders over £500 attract a 5% discount. If you would like any further information or a quote, please let me know”

11/08/17 from Zone EMENA Nestlé Quality & Technical team – reported Fipronil contamination in eggs and chicken meat sourced from the Netherlands, Germany, France and Belgium
- We continue to closely follow developments regarding the potential presence of Fipronil in eggs and chicken meat products originating from farms in the Netherlands, Germany, France and Belgium.
- Our traceability system indicates that we have not received any eggs, egg derivatives or chicken meat or derivatives to date from any implicated farms into our factories.
- In accordance with advice from the food safety regulator, we are carrying out tests on relevant ingredients sourced from affected countries as a precautionary measure.
- All of the tests we’ve carried out to date have returned negative results for Fipronil presence.
- There is no risk to food safety for any of our products.
