Robin Arnold M. 07500 958129 says: “There is better news as I can now offer a much lower price which is as follows –

net Gross Invoice Price
Garlic Puree 6x1kg £13.98 £14.26

Price commencing 1st October or possibly sooner when new crop stock arrives in the UK. The garlic product is made from fresh Turkish garlic bulbs and not Chinese granules, so it is the better quality one, we have a separate factory working on making a puree with the Chinese granules but I will not have a price on that for 6-8 weeks. As mentioned before many of your Members like the Turkish garlic puree over the darker Chinese one, but we will stock both at some point. I have also attached the Price List as requested.

Whitakers Chocolates Ltd – Corporate Thank You’s

Simon Matthews M. 07801 340377 says: “Whitakers can offer gift boxes of chocolates & truffles for this purpose, branded & printed with your particular message to your corporate partners etc. With various sizes available for all budgets, and a minimum order of just 100 boxes, these make a very cost effective gift at Christmas. Perhaps this is also something you could suggest to your members as a gift they could give to their customers, in place of the normal beer or wine that a lot of wholesalers will give at Christmas. This is also a very effective marketing plan, that those given a box as a gift can then be approached to take boxes in their own branding.

There is a huge variety of colours of box and print to choose from – please see attached.  As an example, 100 x 4 chocolate boxes, printed to your requirements, would be just £2.80 per box  plus vat. This includes origination of artwork & printing on the lid. Gift box orders over £500 attract a 5% discount. If you would like any further information or a quote, please let me know”

11/08/17 from Zone EMENA Nestlé Quality & Technical team – reported Fipronil contamination in eggs and chicken meat sourced from the Netherlands, Germany, France and Belgium

  • We continue to closely follow developments regarding the potential presence of Fipronil in eggs and chicken meat products originating from farms in the Netherlands, Germany, France and Belgium.
  • Our traceability system indicates that we have not received any eggs, egg derivatives or chicken meat or derivatives to date from any implicated farms into our factories.
  • In accordance with advice from the food safety regulator, we are carrying out tests on relevant ingredients sourced from affected countries as a precautionary measure.
  • All of the tests we’ve carried out to date have returned negative results for Fipronil presence.
  • There is no risk to food safety for any of our products.

I have enclosed our statement on this issue and would be grateful if this could be issued to all Sterling members who purchase our products.”

This egg situation is obviously developing from the 21k eggs first discussed in the press I will ask Carol to email around next week to get statements from suppliers and post them to the intranet.

I have sent out a request to you all asking for you to submit your commitments for the following contract year. If you have not yet done so, please send them to me as soon as possible.

Joe says: “I have people asking for 21 pallets and this would be charged to ourselves at a 10 x pallet rate price by the transport company. Can you please let the members know the rates are as follows; Mixed / 1 x pallet, 5x pallets, 10x pallets, Full Load – 24/26 pallets” The pricelist has been amended to reflect this.

Current balances – “There will be a cut off date and I would suspect due to the longevity of the award date to the new contract date, everyone should have taken their balances by the end of September 2017, so we can start afresh on the new contracts commencing 1st October.

If there is a massive rush for stock, we will honour the orders placed before the 30th September 2017. If a member is out of contract and taken their commitment then I will start charging them at new season prices from August – but it will not come off next year’s commitment.”

Princes Limited

Stephanie Ashton M. 07875 443 644 says: “We are experiencing a few problems at our Bradford sites at the moment and as a result we have been shorting all variants of Wells 5 litre dilutes. The main problem is the line that produces 3 and 5 litre dilutes broke last week and the part required has not arrived. All customers have been overselling due to the warm weather and this has left us with very little buffer stock.
Next production will be next week. However I will keep you updated.

Extons Foods Ltd Ltd – Sterling Caterers Essentials – Grated Cheese

Nicky Gavey M. 07702 877266 says: “I wanted to touch base in regards to the pricing – as you know the dairy market continues firm.  The growth in demand from Asia, a poor spring flush and pressure for a reduction in European herd sizes has pushed up the prices considerably.  Demand for butter is at a record high (above £5000 / tonne) and prices for dairy products are soaring at a fast rate with minimal stocks available.

As such I need to review your pricing, details are attached for all deliveries made on or after the 7th August. I understand that these are significant increases for your members to take on but I can assure you that they will be in line with the market and should still be competitive”

Nestlé Professional UK Ltd  – Nescafe 750g EDLP

Karl Bell M. 07764 370148 we have agreed to allow Nestle to implement an EDLP at 15% off for 750g (nett. £97.18) effective from 1st August 2017 this will replace the 4 times a year promotion that had been on offer. Karl intends to show the 15% on each promotion as a reminder to members.

Premier Foods

Ross Brown 07711 798812 says: “Unfortunately, we need to pass on another cost price increase on a few retail lines. Please find attached document showing new prices on lines changing from 11th September. Below is the rationale for the increase in costs.”

“As you may be aware, we continue to face into a rapidly changing environment.  Some of the cost of goods increases that we were anticipating have accelerated beyond our expectations.  Prices such as milk and tin in particular have continued to rise.  As a result we must continue to review our offer and make some difficult decisions on our own internal costs and the cost of our products.

To mitigate some of the challenges, we have restructured internally with the unfortunate loss of some of our colleagues and are also making significant savings through logistics and manufacturing initiatives.  We are also changing some of our pack sizes on specific lines and will be putting through a cost increase on a selected number of products.  These increases will be across the trade and will be effective Monday 11th September.  The attached documents highlight the changes in cost prices across those products.  These changes are not implemented lightly and we have tried to limit the impact to specific packs where we are facing into cost pressures.”

 1727 Newsletter Dry Goods  – 07 July 2017

Head Office Buying Strategy

As you will all be aware we have strengthened the resources available to us here at head office with regard to buying. Daniel has spent this initial period getting to know suppliers, members and how we operate as a business.

The board nominated 3 of its members to form a subcommittee to develop and oversee a strategy to ensure that best use is being made of this extra resource. The strategy that we have agreed upon is based around a “Super Six” items that will form part of a 3 month promotional strategy of 18 key lines on offer. The idea being that members that wish to sign up to the promotion will give a commitment to a certain volume which in turn will give Daniel the leverage to negotiate special short term pricing with suppliers.

The work starts with gathering information from members with regard to your lines in each of Frozen, Chilled, Non-Foods & Ambient. This is where we need your help to share your data. We need to know from whom and what volume you buy – it is essential information for us to gather.

We can then sort through this data which is a big task in itself but we will contact you directly with what information to include such as manufactures order code etc.

We obviously will not be asking for and do not need anything sensitive such as who you sell to.

This will allow us to identify which products are being bought, in what quantity and from which suppliers.  The ultimate aim is to identify key lines that are purchased across several suppliers and by gathering the volume together, take advantage of the group’s volume to secure a deal.

The suggestion is the H/O would electronically produce a blank Super Six flyer highlighting the products (having agreed on a selling out price) and leave space for members that have signed up to add their own details and get them printed. October was suggested as a start date – last quarter of 2017.

I know that many of you have recently shared with Daniel information on ambient products suitable for own label but this is too limited information for us to progress with, so if we could have your continued co-operation with this it would be most appreciated.

The other main area of concern to members is our trading with the large Branded Suppliers, obviously the moving to one supplier of an offer does not work,  but if a larger volume can be committed to for the time of the offer this may move the dial with these guys.  Also Daniel is to be tasked to work with members to ensure that they are maximising their marketing monies with these larger companies. As there is often talk of “different pots” other than just off invoice.

This would obviously mean a different way of members interacting with the group and while wanting to respect members independence it was felt that some change to members willingness to make commitments was needed to progress.  Obviously we are a diverse group of wholesalers and not all members will want or be able to sign up to these additional promotions. This was felt to be a good start.

I will continue dealing with own label which then offers clarity to Suppliers, Members and HO of who will be dealing with what.

The board have agreed for the group to become members of the FWD (Federation of Wholesale distributors) This allows the FWD when lobbying government to rightfully claim to represent all the leading wholesalers in the UK. The following announcement will shortly appear in the trade press:

Sterling Supergroup, which represents 38 foodservice wholesalers and distributes the Sterling Caterers Essentials brand, has joined FWD. The Federation now has eight buying groups among its membership with the total number of wholesalers represented now standing at 568.

Sterling is a members’ buying co-operative of delivered wholesalers which collectively turnover of almost £400m. Many of the members are family-owned businesses and supply a full range of ambient, frozen, fresh and chilled foods and non-foods to thousands of catering outlets across the UK. The not-for-profit group’s central office organises a spring show in March and an annual conference and exhibition in September.

James Bielby, chief executive of FWD, said: “We’re delighted to have Sterling in the FWD family. With them on board, we can genuinely claim to represent all the independent wholesaler buying groups in the UK – that’s a very powerful position to be in when we speak to Government on the sector’s behalf. Sterling members’ interests will be represented in Whitehall and Westminster, and they will receive our regular updates on legislation that helps or hinders their businesses. They will also be able to join in our discussions with product suppliers, which are aimed at improving efficiencies in the supply chain, and they will have access to our research such as the current survey of foodservice customers’ online purchasing habits. They will have access to the FWD training bursary, which match-funds investment in individual’s career development within wholesale.

Sterling chairman Trevor Stimpson said: “without doubt this is now the right time for Sterling to join the FWD. Our group turnover and that of our membership continues to grow and develop consistently and we recognise that joining the FWD will bring certain additional benefits and information to our membership as a whole.”

As members we shall receive a monthly newsletter please find attached the FWD Activity Update July 5th 2017. I have not attached the 83 slide FSA document on food recalls, if you would like it let me know and I will email it across.

Zafron Foods – Sterling Caterers Essentials – Mayonnaise

Jack Kenny M.  07841 988810 We have agreed to renew our contract with Zafron Foods for the coming year on mayonnaise. The new contract which is around 5% higher takes effect from 1st September 2017 and will last until 31stAugust 2018. In spite of the increase Zafron were by far the best offer on the table. See attached.

Castle Dairies Ltd – Sterling Caterers Essentials – Butter

Norman Bolton M. 07977 284007  As previously warned, the extraordinary increases in butter continue unabated. Castle Diaries have again submitted price increases that take effect from 17th July 2017, along with further warnings that the market is continuing to rise. See attached price list.

When these prices come into effect Castle Diaries will be WAY out of line with Pritchitts and seem to be ahead of them by quite a long way.  I have to wonder if they are deliberately pricing themselves out of the market due to possible supply problems.  Just speculation but we have let them know that they are likely to lose volume as they completely out.

Pritchitts – Sterling Caterers Essentials – Butter increase 13th July 2017

Paul Underwood 0208 290 7012 says: “Butter commodity prices have surged by 53% after huge increase in demand due to dairy shortages. The Wholesale price of butter is up by 88 per cent in a year, according to analysts. Our manufacturing team have worked hard to try and minimalize this increase but regrettably we have no option but to increase our pricing effective on orders placed on or after 13th July 2017 as per the attached. (Apologies – Paul sent this through a while ago but it was not yet put in the newsletter)

Pritchitts – Sterling Caterers Essentials – Butter increase 11th August 2017

Paul Underwood 0208 290 7012 says: “As I am sure you are aware the commodity dairy market is seeing unprecedented increases, unfortunately we have no option to increase pricing effective 11th August 2017. Please see pricing attached. Paul has indicated that a further increase is likely to be on the way and mentioned £58 – £60 per case!

Pritchitts – Sterling Caterers Essentials – Butter Portions Shortage.

Paul says “All orders for Mini Butter Foils 6×100 will have a 10 day lead time. The reason for this is that at a time when we are experiencing high demand we have also experienced a setback in production with the failure of one of the 11 lines packing portions and we are currently trying to build stocks back up again. It may be wise to order 2 weeks in advance to ensure stock.

Butter

I suggest that you buy butter from Lakeland-Pritchitts as Castle have already leapfrogged them in price even with the mid-July increase from Pritchitts they will only be catching up to Castles current price. As previously stated I am sure that they will attempt to limit your volumes so it is important to keep buying from Pritchitts even if you have already stocked up from Castle pre-increase.

Weetabix Limited – Alpen Sachets Case Change Q3 2017

Sarah Morris M. 07833 435742  DD. 01536 721385 says: We are now in the process of changing the case size on our Alpen Original and No Added Sugar variants at the end of July and new finished product will be available from week 32 (7th August 2017)

Rationale is that the current size is not fit for purpose and too big for most caterers to handle and store and also opens new opportunities for smaller end users to purchase thus gaining extra leverage on sales – feedback that I’ve had so far has been fantastic and everyone I have spoken to in the sector so far (end users and wholesalers at various trade events) have welcomed and embraced the change which I take as a real positive The pallet configurations will be changing from 96 c/s pp to 168 c/s –

The Silver Spoon Company – Deliveries

Kelly Burke M. 07872 465 536 says: “I have attached below, a ‘formal’ statement detailing specific activities at Knowles, but in brief, we have made progress with the backlog and we are seeing orders going out – albeit some of them are late, some are failing and being re-booked. So we are certainly not back to normal service levels.

Myself and the customer service team have been working directly with members to amalgamate orders if there is more than one outstanding, and we are, where possible, seeking agreement to increasing orders to minimum layer quantities. This process is almost complete so then we will be focussed on delivering new orders on time and in full.

We are really very sorry to have let members down, and the fact we have not been able to provide robust information on delivery times has been a real challenge for all. We have committed to support members who have incurred additional costs by sourcing products elsewhere and ask that those details are fed through to me to collate. If there is anything else you need or want to discuss please let me know. In the meantime, we really appreciate the support and cooperation the group have shown us and we will update again when we have more news.

Formal statement for Silver Spoon:

As you are aware, we are continuing to manage the current situation in our logistics supply chain and have an update below on the plan for the next few weeks to help manage this issue to enable Knowles to resume normal service levels.

The situation is still at a critical level and Knowles continue to operate below our expected level of performance and service to our customers.

In the past few weeks the following has been put in place;

–              We have embedded a team of senior personnel from our Logistics and Planning Department within Knowles’ facilities in Wisbech and Wimblington, led by Silver Spoon Supply Director Pat Lally as part of an incident management team.

–              Knowles Board have recruited a new external senior management team who are now managing the current situation as well as pulling together the plan to resume normal service levels as quickly as possible.

–              It has been necessary for us to restrict customer orders to give the management team at Knowles time to get their operation straight and implement the plan to resume normal service levels.

–              We are also in dialogue with senior management at Hain Daniels.

This team and the members of the sales team are likely to be 100% focused on this issue for the next 4-6 weeks. All but urgent “day job” activities are likely to be on hold at this time

The new management team at Knowles have shared with us their plan for a phased increase of loads over the next 3 weeks.  We will be monitoring the progress of this closely and will update you and our customers when we have evidence that the situation is improving and returning to normal.

Knowles have also;

–              Recruited 15 new Full Time Equivalent staff from 26th June

–              A new warehouse manager starts on 3rd July

–              2 Senior operations managers have started this week

–              Departments have been re-structured and some re-located to Wisbech

–              Admin resource has been increased to ensure controls are put in place for daily reporting

Kelly Burke M. 07872 465 536 – I’ve spoken with Kelly and although deliveries are now being made they are a long way from returning to normal service. Extons Foods Ltd Ltd – Sterling Caterers Essentials –  Grated Cheese

Nicky Gavey M. 07702 877266 says: “In light of our conversation yesterday I have reduced all of the mature pricing by 0.05 pence per kilo for both white and coloured cheddar for July supply.  Unfortunately I am unable to offer any reductions for the mild or mozzarella product” Attached are the revised prices for Extons from 3rd July

Nicky says: “We are currently seeing prices firming in the dairy market, this is mainly due to increased demand and the anticipated strong spring flush not occurring, UK milk production for March was down for the first time in four years.  In addition to this, demand for European Cheese in exports markets has grown significantly. This is estimated to be +8% year to date. Below is a summary of the latest market information:

Commodity prices have started to increase in May and again for June when normally we would see prices starting to fall.

Demand for European cheese in export markets has grown significantly.  This is estimated to be +8% year to date, most notably to Japan and Korea

At the Global Dairy Trade auction last week, the average price index was up 3.6% which is the biggest increase this year and this was after 3.1% increase at the previous auction

Commitments to reduce herd sizes from March 1st due to Phosphate Regulations is impacting Dutch output by 6-10% leading to firming of continental prices.”

Sugar – Silverspoon

As I am sure you know Silverspoon / British Sugar appear to be in total freefall with regard to deliveries, and are unable to give a clear answer as to when they will be correcting the problems that they face. Apparently the logistics company that they moved to has taken on a new large customer which has led to the whole system coming to a halt.

I’ve spoken to Robert McGregor of Tate & Lyle Sugars and he says that they are willing to step in and help but they will need to open an account for members without one, which he seems to say will take a couple of hours after you have completed and returned the forms to him. He will need to gain an understanding of the volume that may be involved as he does not want them to find themselves unable to deliver.

Robert has told me to tell members without accounts to get in touch with him.

Kelly Newell M. 07894 492474 says: “Please see attached Christmas 2017 pricing, with enhanced pricing across Family Circle and Jacobs Biscuits for Cheese 900g.  With these products being claimed as a group EDLP retro this will still apply and the enhancement will be via off invoice discount.

You will also see that with effect from mid-August 30607 Family Circle 5 x 720g will be replaced by 35112 Family Circle 5 x 670g, the CSP will remain @ £24.59 as this did not form part of the price increase earlier this year but has weight out.  For the remainder of 2017 I will pro rata the retro to give the same net effect at pence per gram however from January 2017 the retro will take into consideration the cost price increase with weight out.  I am exploring options on a potential 6x900g format which is more suited to foodservice of which I will communicate once I have further detail and pricing.

Please also see attached updated EDLP sheet to include the above, there are also some amends to this on forthcoming pack changes across Jaffa and I have added the new Mini Gingers / Cookies to this.”

Nestlé Professional

Karl Bell M. 07764 370148

Members have been reporting 750g Nescafe offers from competitors that match or better our promotional buy in price. I’ve been told about NW Teas, Bidfood & DCS who are offering around £95 and as low as £92 for full pallets.

Our current on promo price is £94.88, during June Nestle are running a focus week where your telesales can earn £0.50 per tin sold (or £3 per case). The only concession I have managed to wring from Karl is that your telesales can have a 2 week period to earn the additional £0.50 per tin.

Also for your info Nestle pay a LED or Load Efficiency Discount of £20 per full pallet of a single product which is about 40p per case.

I am continuing my discussion with Nestle they had (separately) offered an EDLP of £97.18 or enhanced promotional offer of £93.75 but neither of these addresses the central issue of them creating a grey market in their own products.

Nestlé Professional – June Gold Blend Offer

Butter

Below is a communication that was sent out to all members that are currently buying own label butter earlier this week:

Please note that we have been notified of significant increases in the cost of butter that will be coming through the system in the next few weeks.

Can I suggest that you buy as much butter as you can from both Castle Dairies & Pritchitts today. No doubt both will be looking to limit supply but at this point most of you should be able to purchase from both suppliers and try your best to build stock as suggested in the newsletter dated 12th May 2017.

Below is what we know so far:

We received calls from both of our incumbent suppliers of butter as well as other butter packers explaining how the market over the last few days has seen extraordinary increases.

These increases have been driven by the lack of rain causing shortages of milk across Europe.  These shortages of milk have caused the price to increase to the point where companies have been reneging on contracts.

This has led to panic buying in general and shortages in supply.

At the end of March the cost of Butter : £3,.650/MT
In April they rose to around : £3,750/MT
Early May seen increases of around £150 to £200/MT : £3,950/MT
Yesterday forward deals on butter for July were being sold at : £4,760/MT
This in an £800/MT increase!

Both Paul Underwood (Pritchitt’s) and Norman Bolton (Castle Dairies) are predicting the cost of a case of 40x 250g of butter to be over £50 per box early into the 3rd quarter of 2017. (JULY). Please see Dairy Market Report attached.

Confidentiality of Group Deals

I am, to say the very least extremely disappointed to be addressing this matter yet again! I had thought that we as a group had moved past this very destructive behaviour.

Daniel has been working with Princes in an effort to get some relief on our Orange Juice contracted price, which in itself is quite a difficult task as we are contracted to a volume. However one of the reasons Princes are reluctant to offer us a discount is that when we originally contracted late last year at least one member shared the details of the offer with Multiple Marketing who in turn as a large Princes customer wanted to know from Princes Upper Management why we were getting better offers than they were. Stephanie did not bring this to our attention at the time, only now has it come to light that this is one of the factors working against us! As I am sure you will all realise this has a very corrosive effect on our buying ability. The member that shared the information with Multiple Marketing may have had the wish to stay with Multiple Marketing and assumed no harm would come in getting them to match the price, while harm may not have been done to that member it has undoubtedly been done to their fellow members and in fact to the whole group.  It may also have been a member feeling a bit sorry for Multiple Marketing and just letting them know how far out they were. Please PLEASE refer them back to us here at Head Office.

I would like to reiterate that Group Deals are for Sterling Members ONLY and should not be shared outside of the group.

F J Need (foods) Ltd – Sterling Caterers Essentials – Grated Cheese

Dawn Storey M. 07801 126613 as discussed in last week’s news letter, we have changed one of the companies that offer dual supply on grated and added FJ Need to become our 2nd partner for dual supply on Block.

Unfortunately Dawn has decided to put through a price increase on the grated cheese, she has, to be fair lowered the increase from where she wanted to put them last week but has not held them as she has with the block. This now make her more expensive than Extons see comparison of net net prices below:

FJ Need increase comes into effect on 29th May 2017.

Product Pack size Exton FJ Needs 29th May 2017 FJ v EX
Grated White Cheddar 6x2kg / 10x1kg £3.000 £3.094 3.13%
Grated Red Cheddar 6x2kg / 10x1kg £3.160 £3.218 1.82%
Grated White Mature Cheddar 6x2kg / 10x1kg £3.200 £3.292 2.87%
Grated Red Mature Cheddar 6x2kg / 10x1kg £3.260 £3.317 1.73%
Grated 100% Mozzarella 6x2kg / 10x1kg £2.900 £2.995 3.27%
Grated 70/30 Mozzarella 6x2kg / 10x1kg £2.930 £3.044 3.90%

Attached are the FJ Needs Own Label Grated Cheese prices from 29th May and current Own Label Block Cheese price.

Please bear in mind that we are working with both Extons to get the grated packaging in place and with FJ Needs to get the block packaging in place, we will let you know when these are ready as soon as we know.

FWP Matthews Ltd – Sterling Caterers Essentials – Flour

Paul Matthews  T- 01993 830 342 I have discussed the overrider situation with Paul and notified him that from 22nd May 2017 we wish to revert to net net pricing, copy of the new invoice price attached.

I also made it plain that as a self funded 2% overrider on own label flour since Oct 2015 we are very aggrieved at the idea of this being “written off” in his administration. He agreed with my email and told me that he shall forward to his accounts department I am therefore assuming that not only will they revert to the net price they will accept members withholding the 2% from payment.

Martin Matthew – Sterling Caterers Essentials – Jam

Joe Murphy M. 07855 082200 we have agreed to continue the Sterling Caterers Essentials Jam with Martin Matthews. This does represent an increase over the current price as these items are imported from Italy, Martin Matthews have maintained the price despite the large change in the Euro since we last contracted. This new price on own label comes into effect on 1st July 2017, see attached.  Also attached is the full jam offering from Martin Matthews, these prices are going up effective Monday 5th June.

Walkers – PepsiCo UK & Ireland – Promo 7 onward

David Howells M.07825 852 730 says: “I have received a note internally flagging that I have over funded the Walkers Std promos that I have run all year. The £1.47 retro was meant to be sold out by your members as a “Buy 3 save £3 promo” meaning that anyone buying single cases should be paying full price. As this is a multibuy deal we assume there is a 70% redemption rate on these lines.

Therefore instead of £1.47 off every case we should only be funding this for 70% of cases bought. We now have two options, we can either communicate this message out to all members and moving forward take 30% off their invoice, or I can reduce the funding to £1.03 and pay 100% of the promotion. I think the later would be easier. Can we get this funding changed from June? I have re-attached the submission forms”

I have told David that June is an unacceptable change date as the buying in is just about to start, he says that he will fight at his end to keep the current arrangement in place but will have to move to the current promo price for £8.98 to £9.42 on Walkers Standards. We have changed the promo for P7 & P8 to reflect this change.

A.G. Barr plc – Promo 7

Alex Freeman M. 07587639702 tells us that “Unfortunately due to current availability issues I need to pull the promotional activity on Simply Fruity PMP 3.29 and Plain Pack 330ml for P7.  I will be looking to move this promotion back to September.”  We have updated the P7 offer.

Fayrefield Foods – Price increase

Rod Allsworth M. 07920 536959 Rod says: “After a period of what looked like a re-alignment we are now seeing prices rise again, in particular on butter, where we have seen prices rise back to levels seen in 2016. We saw prices rise in April but decided not to pass these on in the hope it was a temporary blip. It is now evident that this wasn’t a blip and prices have gone from strength to strength.  What is driving this you may ask? Well several factors which include consumption rising away from yellow fats, export volumes strong due to exchange rates, a huge overstock of skimmed milk powder. Alongside all of this, milk volumes are OK but with the weather being dry – worryingly dry meaning milk in not as plentiful as expected and with Ireland seeing the driest April for 40 years. We will unfortunately have to limit the amount of butter we can supply to our average weekly sales over the last 3 months due to the limited availability, please talk to us about this and we will do our very best for you. Ultimately we will see this pull through to cheese prices too, starting with Mozzarella and cheddar in the weeks and months to come. Having said that we have reduced our prices where we can on coloured cheddar and mature cheddar, passing on the savings we currently have.  We have also made the decision to de-list the Olympic range of sauces as these unfortunately didn’t take off for us as expected. All prices, up or down will need to come into effect for deliveries on and after Monday 29th May 2017. See attached.

Castle Dairies Ltd – Sterling Caterers Essentials – Butter

Norman Bolton M. 07977 284007 has informed us that the butter market has not improved and the price increase that he would have liked to implement on the 3rd  May will have to go ahead for deliveries commencing 5th June details attached.

Norman says: “As you will see from the attached report, Butter & Cream prices continue to “firm up. It looks as though this will remain the case for quite a few weeks.

The dry weather in the U.K has not helped either & as yet there has not been a “flush” (in fact prices for UK produced bulk butter stocks have moved up c.£200/tonne in the last 3 weeks!). Unfortunately, I will need to implement the increases I detailed in my email of 3rd May & unless the market improves don’t be too surprised if I have to advise of further increases shortly after. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Personally, it’s been a good few years since I’ve seen stocks so tight as this time of the year.”

Norman has requested that members forward their order requirements to both contacts below: Sarah O’Regan: sarah@castledairies.co.uk  and Tracy Kirtland: tracy@castledairies.co.uk

Members should be looking to build some stock ASAP as stated last week Castle do have Sterling Label boxes in stock.  Below is the current comparison followed by the new June pricing from Castle Dairies. As yet we have not been informed by Pritchitts of an increase, when last discussed they indicated their price they would maintain current price until the end of May.

Cheese Grated & Block

As you will note from the minutes of the meeting held this week we are looking to move to Dual Supply on Block and change one of the Dual Suppliers on Grated. This is all in an effort to stay as competitive as possible. Taste tests were performed on sample products; in general little difference was noted between the suppliers which means we are trying to actively go for the most competitive supplier.

We are getting other indications that cheese prices are going up again which reinforces the information in Norman’s market report above.

F J Need (foods) Ltd – Sterling Caterers Essentials –  Block Cheese

Dawn Storey M. 07801 126613

We have agreed to allow FJ Need to co-pack the block cheddar. This will take a few weeks to get the packaging in place – Dawn has agreed to hold the price attached until the end of June, though she says that prices are moving up, apparently many dairies are moving over to butter production due to the high butter prices!

Below is a net net comparison of FJ Needs V’s Fayrefields 1% is added to the invoice price of both suppliers:

Net Net prices 1st May – End June 1st May

Mature Red 4 x 5kg £3.317 £3.36
Mature Red 8 x 2.5kg £3.366 £3.41

Dawn says that she can supply Sterling Branded Block Cheddar with white labels as an interim measure from 22nd May if members want to get started straight away. We shall be working on a colour printed label and aim to get the printed box but we shall not be getting a printed sleeve for the cheese as with Fayrefield.

Placing this volume with FJ Needs has the added benefit of allowing members to mix their grated and block on one order.

Grated Cheese

We have decided to delist Dairy Partners and allow Extons to co-pack the Grated Cheese. Dairy Partners have been out on price on everything but Mature Cheddar for quite some time and despite many phone calls have not closed the gap on the other offers that we have been receiving. Most members had already voted with their feet and moved volume across to FJ Needs over the past months.

Extons are already supplying many members with sliced cheese and have installed a grating line into the factory.

We have had a price increase come through from Dawn at FJ Needs on Grated (which is not reflected above) but we are pushing back on this and hope to get her to hold her prices as she had done to win the block. If FJ Needs do implement the change it will make Extons an even more attractive buy. Extons have agreed to hold prices until the end of June 2017.  Account application form attached.

We have notified Dairy Partners of our intention to move suppliers, as it happens they are just about out of stock of packaging so members should feel free to move as soon as they wish. (They had been in the process of ordering new packaging which they were attempting to stop) From what Will tells us they shall be just about out of stock after fulfilling all of the orders currently in their systems.

1718 Newsletter Dry Goods – 5th May 2017

Castle Dairies Ltd – Sterling Caterers Essentials – Butter

Norman Bolton M. 07977 284007 we have agreed to go to dual supply on butter with Castle Dairies.

We had agreed this at the end of February and it is in the meeting minutes but was not formally notified in the newsletter – apologies for that. It does however mean that we have now signed off packing and Castle Dairies are in a position to ship in Sterling Brand straight away. They will be producing the following products in Sterling Brand:

Type Size Notes
Salted Butter 40x250g
Unsalted Butter 40x250g
Butter Portions Size 7’s 5x100x7’s Portions Packaging not yet ready but will be soon – please note the 5 x 100 not 6 x 100’s that Pritchitts provide.
Salted Butter 20x250g
Unsalted Butter 20x250g

Some members have been splitting boxes and feel that the 20 x 250g case size will be a significant advantage.

As of 8th May we will have a 2% overrider in place on all purchases, the pricing offered by Castle Dairies is only until the end of May, this price has been on the table since 10th February (notified to you in newsletter 1706 Newsletter Dry Goods, in the Castle Brand) and they are under considerable pressure to increase the price but have agreed to hold the price until the end of the Month as the packaging is only now ready.

Norman wanted to know should they pack and hold the Sterling Brand Product but as I do not know what volume will move across I have agreed that I will let you know that it is now available in Sterling Brand and hope that you will be accommodating in this first weeks or so to allow their production to “ramp up”.

As mentioned Castle have held the price since mid February and as you know the butter market has moved up since then, they are suggesting that if the market does not ease down (as they were hoping with the Spring Flush) they will be forced to apply an increase in the order of 3.8% from June.

The product is a Sweetcream Butter as is Pritchitts and it has a 20 week shelf life from production.  Attached again are the credit application forms that were circulated earlier and the Sterling Caterers Essentials page with the product order description, pallet configurations etc. The minimum order is 1 pallet however the pricing was developed on delivery to Essex, Norman had needed to apply a surcharge to deliveries much further afield, and he has now agreed to offer the same price on minimum orders of 4 pallets to Scotland etc.

FWP Matthews Ltd – Flour – In Administration

Paul Matthews  T- 01993 830 342

Bad news I am afraid FWP have indeed gone into administration. The business continues to trade but they are seeking “protection from their creditors”

Which from our perspective essentially means that they do not intend to pay the 2016 overrider.  I think this to be grossly unfair. When I called to speak to Paul he is away for 2 weeks – the strangest time to take a holiday that I can think of!

My suggestion is that members work out what they are owed (2% from October 2015 – 13th April 2017) and look to withhold it from payment.

We at head office MUST be told if you do this, so that we do not pursue FWP for anything that has already been withheld. Please notify Jodie of that amounts that you have withheld, and if they allow you to do this.

Nestlé Professional – Incentives 2017

Karl Bell M. 07764 370148 has agreed to continue with group incentives through 2017.

Beverage Incentive

This time the Beverage Incentive has reverted back to Nescafé rather than Gold Blend but the outline of the plan remains unchanged details attached. Basically a focus week in June and another in September with £1,000 up for grabs by your telesales teams to win.  Along with direct incentives for Telesales during the focus week. (You get to choose your week during June & September)

A couple more members got involved last year, but Karl was toying with discontinuing this incentive, if any other members could review to see if this is something that they can get involved with that would be great.

Food Incentive

Details of the Food Incentive is also attached.  Carol has already circulated your potential individual earnings level – the incentive is open to all members trading over £20k per year on food; depending on your spend is your potential voucher “haul”. To maximise earnings the OP (Operating Plan or forecast level for the whole of 2017) has to be achieved by the end of Nov 2017. This is the same as previous years. The vouchers can be used in any way you see fit.

There is a “failsafe” if you hit your OP at the end of Dec then you will earn at the 50% and if you exceed your OP by 10% the vouchers are increased by 50%

Carol will keep you appraised of your individual situation.

For those remaining members trading under £20k they have the chance to go into a draw to win vouchers of £125 x 2 if they hit their OP.

Unilever Food Solutions – Spring Show Offers

FWP Matthews Ltd – Sterling Caterers Essentials –  Flour

Paul Matthews  T- 01993 830 342 As previously reported FWP Matthews have been in some serious financial difficulty. Paul called me and effectively called Force Majeure on the Own Label Flour that they pack for us. He told me that they were in a very bad position they had been subject to False Accounting for several years and they were out by a very large number.

He told that they had been short shipping members due to a combination of a very bad cash flow situation and the fact that the wheat with the correct protein levels is in very short supply and prices have consequently gone ”through the roof”!

He is now in a position of having to put up prices with immediate effect or parting with our business, as every product is showing a loss.  Their last sales person compounded their problems by not correctly calculating the position, added to the correct protein level problem has made it uneconomic to supply us.

He says that generally in the trade prices are going up due to the tightness of wheat situation but obviously their financial problems has exaggerated their situation.  He needs to implement these prices straight away it is the only way to keep the bank on his side.

These prices are obviously quite shocking from a percentage point of view.  I had asked Daniel to get in touch with Heygates as soon as rumours surfaced of problems a few weeks ago. Phil is away on holiday until Monday and will come back with pricing then – hopefully in time for our buying meeting on Tuesday.  We are attempting to contact other suppliers too.

Dairy Partners Ltd – Sterling Caterers Essentials – Grated Cheese

We are having increasing difficulty communicating with DP. It was pointed out to me last week that their price on the Mature actually went up! They have (after much badgering) come in with a price that is now lower. Effective 13th March attached.

We have received attractive grated cheese pricing from Exton Foods and are now wondering if the time is right to make a change with one of the two suppliers in own brand – we shall discuss at the buying meeting in April.

Fayrefield Foods – Sterling Caterers Essentials – Block Cheese

Rod Allsworth M. 07920 536959 says: “Following a year of prices increases we are seeing some re-alignment within the dairy industry.

What does this mean? Well if we look at last year everything got out of kilter. Milk prices languished around 20ppl for much of the year. Cheddar cheese went up to around the £3000 per tonne mark and butter hit the dizzy heights of £4000 per tonne, none of which made much sense!!  What we are seeing now is some prices going up, some coming down and some staying exactly where they are. The euro seems to have stabilised at around the €1.17 for the moment but how long that will last is anyone’s guess.

We have launched some new products including a fantastic chilled coffee and a whole new range of products from Lactalis. I have attached our current price list which is based on a mixed pallet but please do speak to me if you have requirements for more than this so that we can look at multi pallet discounts. All price, up or down will need to come into effect for deliveries on and after Monday 20th March 2017” Own label prices are attached too.

Nestlé Professional – Coffee Incentive – proposed changes.

Karl Bell M. 07764 370148 says that he would like to discontinue the Beverage Incentive that they have run for the past few years to be replaced by – NEW Retro rebate of 1% on all sales whilst on Promotion only of Nescafe Original 6x750g (March / June / Sept inclusive of buying in periods) This is to drive loyalty & competitiveness in the market as a new initiative on Core business.

I would like to know how do you feel about this & do you believe this will have the desired effect?

Karl Bell M. 07764 370148 says “Nestlé Professional will be increasing cost prices on our Confectionery portfolio. These changes are necessary due to the significant increase in input costs which have affected our products. All of these cost price changes will be effective on deliveries despatched after 12:01am, 4th May 2017. Please find enclosed the revised Nestlé Professional cost price list.”

Karl tells me that they average increase is around 9% the attached price is the full Nestle price list. He can only issue our EDLP one with our 12% discount later.

The Kraft Heinz Company

Mike Pearson M. 07736 572248 says “We have made a business decision to delay the impending Heinz Foodservice cost price increase (planned for Monday 3rd April 2017) to Monday 1st May 2017 (this will be on orders placed on or after 1st May 2017). The reason for this is to allow customers more time to make amendments in their system / inform their customers of the price increases.

A decision has also been made not to put a cost price increase through on our Table Top sauces SKU’s, with the exception of 342g Opaque Tomato Ketchup.

Please find attached the amended price file with the revised effective date of 1st May 2017 and the correction on the new pricing on Table Top SKU’s.”

CCEP – Coca Cola – Terms 2017

Karen Smith M. 07976 976 989 Email: kasmith@cokecce.com  Karen came into HO to discuss a new set of terms for 2017, they are needless to say being Coca Cola hideously complicated. She tells me that you will all be getting them explained to you on a local level.  Essentially they revolve around the sharing of data with CCE and then they task you with increasing distribution points to achieve higher levels of overrider. They will be dispensing with the core range.

As the terms currently stand all of you with the exception of those on “Fast Food” or “Seasonal” terms are eligible to earn a 3% rebate for data sharing – it is at this same 3% they are offering once again. I can only assume that if this was not enough to tempt you for the past couple of years this will not act as an incentive now. I would like to understand your objections to sharing data with CCE.

CCEP – Coca Cola – Payments for 2014/ 2015 / 2016

Karen Smith M. 07976 976 989 Jodie has been having a terrible time gathering in payments from CCEP. They make random payments that do not match any of the reported figures. And then worse still they offer new figures that are incorrect and seek to “claw back” due to over payments. Having started this process with Madeleine and trying to work through it with Karen and their Hungarian Accounts Department we have come to a point where we can put a line under 2014 / 2015. However I am afraid that this means some of you will be having monies “clawed back” I hope that you will remember that when Jodie paid these sums out they came with a “warning” as we were not able to verify that they were correct, but had been “sitting” on the money for quite some time.

Jodie made a payment on 11th Sept 2015 for CCE with the following warning:

CCE  – Coca Cola Enterprises Payment

Please find attached payment from CCE, I’m afraid that this payment does come with a Severe Health Warning, in that  I have been trying for several months to get CCE to clarify what the payment they put into our account relate to  as the figures that they supply us and the amount of the funds sent NEVER seem to match.  I have a dossier of nearly 50 pages going back and forth with CCE to gain a clear understanding. At this point I have enough funds from CCE to make these payments to you and they are to the best of my understanding correct, however I want to warn you that if CCE change their mind I may have to “claw” some of this back,  I have been holding off payment as I wanted to avoid the possibility of “claw back”  but Vanessa and I now feel that given the amount of money involved and the length of time that has elapsed making this payment with this warning is the best option.”

Some of you will be receiving a payment when Jodie processes them next week, all I can do is apologies to those of you with substantial clawbacks. Obviously this does not make the info about 2017 look any more attractive!

CCEP – Coca Cola – Promotion 5

Karen Smith M. 07976 976 989 Carol has updated the CCE offer on P5 as they are offering only 70% redemption on this offer, to achieve the full 100% you must provide full sales out data and marketing materials to you local representative.  Please find attached the updated offer. Also Karen has submitted her proposed calendar for 2017 a copy of which is here along with other suppliers that have submitted their outline 2017 proposals.

FWP Matthews Ltd – Sterling Caterers Essentials –  Flour

2 members have reported to me that they have heard that FWP Matthews are in serious financial trouble. Both members reported that it is all over the flour business. Not that I want to do anything that may push them over the edge but thought I would share the “gossip” in case you are in a position to take some extra stock in case the worse happens as I think we would find it very difficult to replicate the pricing that we are currently enjoying. Apparently they lost a great deal of money on the Coastline/Turners of Kent bankruptcy. Daniel had a word with them and they claimed all was well, while sounding stressed at the same time!

His name is Daniel Larkin; his latest role was in buying with a London based food ingredient supplier to manufacturing but he has a wealth of experience in Food Service having cut his teeth at JJ’s Foodservice as a procurement manager.

I wonder if I could ask again that members send in a copy of their Price Guides – PLOF’s if you would be kind enough to supply us with 2 or 3 copies of your latest as some of the member’s guides we have here date back as far as 2011! I think that it will be helpful to Daniel to have a copy of your brochure which will help him to familiarise himself with your individual offering as a business.  Please feel free to give Kerry or Carol a ring to find out which version of your guide we have.

Princes Limited

Stephanie Ashton M. 07875 443 644 says: “You are probably aware that we continue to be in a very volatile market place and this is putting increasing pressure on finished goods prices. The key drivers of this are the rising costs of raw materials, currency fluctuations and now some pretty big increases on tinplate which have been enforced from the beginning of 2017.Unfortunately this leaves us with no choice but to increase our UK manufactured products from 1st April 2017. This includes beans, peas, pulses and UK produced fruit (excluding any contracted lines).”  See attached.

1706 Newsletter Dry Goods  – 10th February  2017

The Kraft Heinz Company

Mike Pearson M. 07736 572248 says that they shall be issuing a full price list shortly however he wanted to share the following from his Foodservice Director:

“Cost Price Review Effective on Orders Placed on or after 03/04/2017

I am writing to advise you of a cost price review for certain products within the following Kraft Heinz Foodservice categories:

The review will apply to orders placed on or after 3rd April 2017.

Kraft Heinz Foodservice reviews its list pricing on a regular basis, in order to assess the impact of increases in our input costs and of currency changes. We are also constantly looking for ways in which we can offset price rises through increased efficiencies in our purchasing, manufacturing and company operations. These efforts have enabled us to maintain list prices constant for the last two years.

Unfortunately, the significant cost increases produced by recent market conditions have exceeded our capacity to absorb additional cost and so a price review is now required.  We will be contacting you shortly with full details of your new cost prices.”

W.G Buchanan – Sterling Caterers Essentials – Dried Fruit & Nuts

Jonathan McVeigh has sent through the following Foodservice Market Report January 2017, he says: “We had taken cover for the last six monthly market/pricing review (September 2016) and it was with some nervousness that we entered the market again this year – while there is no doubt that Brexit has weakened sterling and there is still an upward price pressure on imported goods (dried fruit & nuts) it can be seen from the general stabilisation of our prices and some modest increases (with a couple of exceptions!) that we still believe we are well placed in the market to provide competitively priced goods”

Coconut : Prices have continued to rise with a typhoon in the Philippines limiting supplies there and other markets consequently raising prices
Almonds : Almonds prices have had modest increases due to record export figures from the USA but are still historically quite low
Walnuts : Higher worldwide demand, India reluctant to book forward and currency have pushed prices slightly higher but are also historically quite low. However prices expected to continue to rise
Cashews/Pecans : Prices continue to rise sharply with poor crop availability and huge demand from China
Pine Nuts : Prices have eased due to a larger crop being harvested
Quinoa :  With its new found popularity and subsequent demand increase prices have firmed
Cherries & Peel : Prices continue to rise moderately due to European supply currency issues.
Prunes : Prices have eased due to better crops and availability

Attached is their full list price and our updated own label price list.

I wonder if you would be kind enough to supply us with 2 or 3 copies of your latest PLOF? I know that this is the season to be working on the price lists but if do you have them prepared a couple of copies here at head office would be most appreciated. Some of the member’s guides we have here date back as far as 2011!

Member Meetings 2017

The next member meeting takes place on 14th February in Birmingham attached is the agenda for the meeting. Once again I would like to point out that all members are welcome to attend, however you must let Kerry know in advance of your attendance to ensure you are catered for. I have also attached again the full Sterling calendar for 2017. Please ensure that you mark out the dates in your diaries for the Spring Show & Annual Conference.

Spring Show 2017 28th March 2017 – Nottingham Belfry – If you have not yet informed Kerry of your attendance at the show I would ask that you do so ASAP. We are holding some rooms and need to know if you need them urgently. I would urge you to attend the Spring Show this year I can only reiterate that the show is well supported by suppliers but they ONLY do that to see YOU! Attached is a list of the suppliers already booked to attend.

Head Office Staff – New Person.

We have a new lady join us here at Head Office her name is Carol Bartlett. She is taking on the role that deals primarily with the promotional activity and reception duties. Overriders to be Terminated

We will not be seeking to renew terms for 2017 with the following suppliers as they either do not respond or claim no sales within the group. If you are trading with any of these suppliers can you let me know?

Baraka Foods Didn’t sign in 2016

(They claim that no members have traded in 2015 & 2016

HB Ingredients Didn’t sign in 2016 – (They claim that terms are now local.  We informed members 03/02/16)
Heygates Did not respond to requests to sign once Own Label business was lost so no terms in place
Juniper Hill NO response to requests for payment for Spring show. Awaiting figures for 2016
Wrapex Didn’t sign in 2016 (no response)

Marketing Monies

As I have in the past I have listed again the suppliers that have some sort of mention of marketing monies on Overrider Agreements held here at HO.  Members MUST contact the suppliers listed and agree how, if you qualify, this money is to be spent. It is best to not wait until the end of the year, there is little to be gained from “banging in” an invoice for 2016 if you did not previously individually agree how to proceed. This is largely the same document as last year, if you did not put things in place last year – this is the time to ensure that you have them in place and agreed for 2017, so that when I remind you in 2018 there will be funds for you to collect!  Please feel free to contact me if you have any question on this.

CustomPack Ltd – Sterling Caterers Essentials – Sachets – Force Majeure

Simon Willars M. 07872 101399 says: “It is with regret that I have to formally communicate a price rise for the products we supply to your buying group members.

We have absorbed everything we can since Brexit back in June 2016, but due to the volatility of some commodity markets and currency fluctuations we have to pass these costs on to the market. I must stress that the price increases we have to pass on ONLY impacts the price by the commodity/currency impacts in those specific categories highlighted below. We have not increased any of our process or manufacturing costs in an attempt to keep the rises as limited as possible.

The products we sell to your members which will be affected are Sauce sachets

Sauce sachets Sugar Salt & Pepper (and other non sugar /sachet lines).
+4.5% 7.4p per kilo +3%

The price per case by product is listed on the attached. The prices will rise to your members on all orders delivered on or after 3 April 2017. I apologise that ‘force majeure’ has had to be applied to our annual agreement, but I believe we have done well to delay until now when prices from suppliers have impacted our business already.”

This is obviously very disappointing especially since we only completed our tender in Sept/Oct admittedly the tenders went out much earlier than that but I feel there was enough time for them to make adjustment for the decline in currency in June/July. We have therefore gone back out to tender for both Wet and Dry Sachets but the pricing coming back is not promising so far. Simon did explain in our meeting that they renew their sugar and other major contracts in April, back in Aug/Sept when quoting they hoped things would settle down.

Paul was in to see me and he insists that there is still a drastic shortage of supply. He felt sure that the lower prices being reported in the market were for odd “lots” rather than continual supply. Paul indicated that their read on the market was that prices are set to further rise.

Castle Dairies Ltd – Butter

Norman Bolton M.07977 284007 Home/Office:0151 924 9942

Norman visited head office hot on the heels of Lakeland, Norman tells me that Castle Dairies has been going since 1966. They churn about 30% of the butter that they pack and also trade butter to pack off. They have been packing for Asda, Tesco, Aldi & Lidi. They used to pack for the Irish Dairy Board but this has just come to an end as they have a plant of their own in Ireland. Therefore they now have some capacity in their factory that they would like to fill.

They produce a sweetcream butter with a 14-15 week shelf life, I talked to Norman about dual supply of Sterling Own Label – they are up for that, however the buying team feels that it would be better to take the product in the Castle Dairies Branding and see how it goes.

Norman says that prices are moving all the time but that once members start buying they will guarantee the price for 3 months. Attached is their price list (prices are net net), credit application & a presentation on the company.   As this company is not familiar with Sterling there may be some variability in the cost price depending on distance from Caerphilly most of mainland England should be covered in that price.   Norman@castledairies.co.uk

Comparison Castle Dairies V’s Lakeland Net Price Net price
 Pritchitts (Sterling O/L) Castle Dairies
Salted Butter 40x250g £39.10 £39.00
Unsalted Butter 40x250g £40.00 £39.50
Butter Portions 6x100x7’s £17.50 £18.00

Now that Lakeland have reduced their pricing (as I said after some encouragement) there is little price difference between the 2 companies, but I do wonder if it is wise not to offer this company some volume as if not we will not always have a stick to beat Lakeland with!

Fayrefield Foods – Sterling Caterers Essentials – Block Cheese

Rod Allsworth M. 07920 536959 says I confirm below your new Sterling Own Label Cheese prices effective on deliveries from Monday 13th February 2017.

Sterling Mature Coloured 4x5kg £3.79kg £3.69kg
Sterling Mature Coloured 8×2.5kg £3.84kg £3.74kg
Red Leicester 4x5kg £3.48kg NO CHANGE

Rod tell me that he cannot reduce any earlier as they have just been notified of the change and have to sell through current pricing. He also says that mild cheddar will be the slowest to reduce in price as it was made with the most expensive milk.

Their market read is that the market is set to soften with the oncoming spring “flush” the grass is growing well as it has been a relatively kind winter. But there is a lack of milk around and the Farmers know it, they have been very reluctant to sign new contracts with the dairies.

The new cost prices will be effective on all orders received from Saturday 1st April 2017. There are 2 major factors – currency and market price movement – which would be the key drivers to inflationary input costs. Many of our raw materials such as sugar, vine fruit, nuts, and dairy are imported and have been directly affected by currency. Even UK based raw materials such as wheat and oats have also been impacted by currency as globally traded commodities”

Happy New Year

I do hope that 2017 is a prosperous one for us all. It certainly is going to be a challenging one with the amount of Food Price Inflation that has been coming our way.  If you need us to help with gathering information to help justify these increases to your end-users please let us know.

Change of Head Office Staff

Sarah-Grace no longer works for Sterling, she has not yet been replaced, and in the meantime Jodie is handling the promotions until we find a replacement.

Nestlé Professional

Karl Bell M. 07764 370148 says that their new cost price increase that goes into effect on 25th January 2017,  however he will still honour the promotions that have been put into place for Period 1 (ends 31st Jan) and Period 2 (20th Jan to 28th Feb).

Their systems will not be able to allow the old price to stay on the system during this time so Karl proposes that from the 25th Jan onwards the difference is made up by a retro that we at Head Office will administer with him notifying us of the relevant values to be claimed.

Kellogg Marketing and Sales Company (UK) Ltd – CocoPops Sugar Reduction

Aimee Fitzpatrick M. 07554415765 says: “As discussed Kellogg’s have reduced sugar in Coco Pops by 15%. This is a great move for us and part of our CSR commitment. This goes live on the 27th February and the detail is attached.

Sugar is a dense product – so the removal of this has decreased the weight of the product. However, the number of pops in each box will remain the same due to the same fill. The product will be moving from a 550g packet to a 510g packet with list price remaining the same.

This will affect the retail pack but none of the food service packs which will have a higher fill. This decision was made based on feedback from yourself and members re pricing vs retail.” Amy tells me that only 3 members buy this product and she will be in touch directly with you regarding this.
